Styles of Music Composed: contemporary classical, jazz, brass band
Composing Background or Education: Forty plus years as a freelance composer in all areas, choral, orchestral, theatre, community. Past Lecturer in Music Composition at LIPA in Liverepool, and past Lecturer at Salford University. Composing for large scale orchestras, bands, and saxophone quartets, mandolin and harp, guitar, strings and choir. Also, have set music to poetry of Stevie Smith, with permission from her Executor at the time. This is now being archived at various institutions.
Musical Equipment and Instruments: Guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo.
Philosophy as a Composer: To be willing to try difference ideas and new formulas, yet also to be grounded in the work I have already done. To open minds and feelings through the pieces I compose. Sometimes, also, to surprise and excite.
Additional Information: Most recent works include, El Libro de Parajos, for ESMUC in Barcelona. Premiered at L’Auditori.
One Small Step – to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. Premiered in Portugal.
