Composing Background, Education, or Experience Xiaotian is currently a Undergraduate composition student at the Academy, studying individually with Paul Patterson and piano with Rustem Hayroudinoff. He started playing the piano at the age of 5 and began composing at 6. He studied at the Royal College of Music, Junior Department from 2005 to 2009, with David McBride for composition and Geoffrey Govier for piano. Xiaotian was also a keen member of the Aldeburgh Young Musicians.

As a composer, Xiaotian has collaborated with the Royal Ballet School and the London Contemporary Dance School. In May 2008, he won first prize in the senior division of the 6th Annual International Composition for Orchestra Competition, based in LA, California. Xiaotian was a Finalist of the Sibelius Student Composer of the Year competition, in the 17-18 Classical/Contemporary category – Steve Reich and Karl Jenkins were among the 7 prominent adjudicators.

The awards he received for piano include the Special Concert Prize at the International Piano Competition for Young Musicians in the Netherlands. He was the winner of the Constance Poupard Memorial Prize for piano at the RCM JD. November last year, Xiaotian performed the Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 at the West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge. He has performed in many prestigious venues such as the Bolivar Hall and the Wigmore Hall.

He was the film composer for a short film in 2008 “No Name Actress” which was made in Texas, USA. Recently, he has been working as an Arranger and Additional Music Composer for an upcoming Stephen Hawking documentary for the Discovery Channel in the USA, where the soundtrack will be recorded professionally at Abbey Road in December.
Additional Information: The inspirational composers for me include John Barry, John Williams, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Elgar.
